Speaker: Peter Knight, WACORP

Presentation name: Dynamics of Localised Pressure Testing

Peter Knight is an oil & gas professional with over 18 years of experience in wireline operations and downhole tools. Starting on the back of a truck as a hand in 2004 at Precision Wireline Technologies and working his way up to senior field engineer with WFT. In 2012 a short time was spent in Aberdeen training junior field engineers with WFT and then into Calgary as sales manager for Spectrum Wireline. In 2016 he patented the KWAT (Wireline Abandonment Tool) to set and pressure test plugs in a simultaneous event. In 2018 the decision was made to pursue the technology full time resigning from his sales management role. Forming a joint venture with Steelhaus Technologies in Calgary, Alberta. Taking the helm as president of WACORP (Wireline Abandonment and Completion Corp) to direct the technology development.

The prototype technology was first introduced to the AER Well Operations group. The AER proposed a 10 well pilot to compare the localised pressure test data to surface pressure test data within Directive 20. To date WACORP has successfully deployed the tools for Shell, CNRL, Crescent Point Energy Corp, Bonterra Energy Corp, Barnwell of Canada, Bonavista Energy Corp, TAQA, Lynx Energy, CREW Energy and Gear Energy Ltd. Covering Central and Southern, Alberta including NE, British Columbia. The company continues develop and refine the technology with the support and interest of our valued clients, AER and the BCOGC. In 2021 the KWAT Tool was recognised as a finalist for ICoTA and SPE’s Intervention Technology Award.

Our presentation will discuss the results of 15 wells and 26 zones completed for AER Directive 20 Section 5 compliance: “Once the bridge plug has been set, it must be pressure tested at a stabilized pressure of 7000 kPa for 10 minutes. Showing how multiple factors influence test data from surface and the KWAT’s localised, low volume, high resolution digital data. The benefits that localised testing has for the overall wellbore integrity compared to conventional surface tests. Small leak detection capability due to the low volume of fluid tested. Repeatability of the stabilisation trend, best practices and learnings from the trials.
